Why add decor to your garden

Looking back through history, gardens have always been emphasized. From the Garden of Eden to modern times, writers have placed the principal characters of their stories and sometimes the most exciting events in gardens. Romantic interludes in garden arbors or in shady nooks are a common occurrence. One does not, however, have to be a writer to envision a restful, romantic and beautiful garden. In today’s over-developed suburban landscapes, the land is scalped, trees are removed, and the natural vegetation is destroyed, to be replaced by manicured lawns, demanding unlimited water and polluting chemicals. Professional landscapers frequently continue this trend, replacing native trees with exotics. Fortunately, there are native plant societies which can give good advice about plants for each planting zone, and law makers are beginning to realize that the destruction of the native vegetation allows unwanted plants to take over. In Florida this has happened with the incredible incidence of Brazilian Pepper trees. A shady tree, a garden bench, a beautiful birdbath and a tinkling wind chime make for a pleasant place to spend an afternoon, and with the addition of a solar lantern, a setting for a romantic evening interlude. Statuettes and a waterfall also add to the ambience. For a relatively small investment and some good planning, a suburban tract can become an artistic haven for both humans and small wildlife. Decorate your garden and add to the enjoyment of nature.

Easy rose planting

Planting roses is fairly simple gardening stuff. The first thing is to never let the rose roots dry out. If you do, the rose will either perform poorly the first year or simply die. It does help to soak the roots in warm water for an hour before you plant if you’ve purchased the rose as a bareroot plant. Container grown plants do not have to be soaked. Always did a dollar sized hole for a 25-cent plant. The bigger the hole, the looser the soil will be and the easier those tiny feeder roots will grow quickly. I can’t emphasize this enough. And never, ever (with a bare root plant) cut off healthy roots. You can remove broken roots but leave every healthy one that’s on the plant. They’re your ticket to early blooms. When you backfill the planting hole, I always add one shovel of peat and one shovel of compost for every three shovels of soil. This gives the rose some quick nourishment and makes a wonderful soil for expansion. The only exception to this is if you’re planting in a clay soil and then I only add the compost. I do not add the peat as I want the rose roots to grow out into the soil that surrounds the planting hole. They might establish faster in peat-amended soil but they’ll grow better and survive longer in compost-amended soil. The depth of the bud union (the swollen part where the roots meet the good top rose) is conventionally 2-inches below ground in North America. In northern sections, gardeners have started planting this 6-inches below the ground to protect it during harsh winters. After the rose has been installed in the hole, backfilled and the ground thoroughly pushed down around the plant, I always turn on the hose to thoroughly wet down the ground. After the ground is muddy, I leave the hose to trickle for a half hour or so to really soak the ground. After that, I just wait for blooms and their delightful fragrance.

Why you should consider gardening for your children

: Apparently, we can see how nature is treated these days. It is a sad thing to know that people do not pay attention so much anymore to the environmental problems. What can we do about this? It's as simple as starting with the children. It is good to see the children's involvement with environment-friendly activities. One such nature-loving activity that children could easily get their hands on is gardening. Why should you consider gardening for your children? Here are the benefits that gardening could easily provide the children with: 1. Science In planting, children are indirectly taught the wonders of science like the plants life cycle and how humans intervention can break or make the environment. They can have a first hand experience on the miracle of life through a seed. This would definitely be a new and enjoyable experience for the kids. 2. Life Watching a seed grow into a tree is just as wondrous as the conception to birth and growth of a child. In time, kids will learn to love their plants and appreciate the life in them. Gardening could actually help simulate how life should be treated -- it should be with care. The necessities to live will be emphasized to kids with the help of gardening - water, sunlight, air, soil. Those necessities could easily be corresponded to human necessities, i. e., water, shelter, air, food. By simply weeding out, one could educate how bad influences should be avoided to be able to live life smoothly. 3. Relaxation Studies show that gardening can reduce stress because of its calming effect. This is applicable to any age group. More so, it stimulates all the five senses. Believe it or not, gardening may be used as therapy to children who have been abused or those who are members of broken homes. It helps build one's self-esteem. 4. Quality Time with the Family You can forget about your stressful work life for a while be soothed by the lovely ambience in the garden. You can play and spend quality time with your children. You can talk while watering the plants or you can work quietly beside each other. The bottom line is, always do what you have to do, together with your kids. You might discover a lot of new things about your child while mingling with them in your garden. Let kids become aware of their environment's needs. And one way to jump start that environmental education may be through gardening. It's hitting two birds with one stone -- teach them to respect life while you bond with them.
